Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the proposed Meenakeeran wind farm and battery energy storage project.

Please view all the information presented below about the proposed project. Simply click on the ‘MORE’ button at the bottom of each paragraph to read more about that topic.

The pre-application community consultation for the Meenakeeran wind farm and battery energy storage project has now closed. It is ABO Energy’s intention to submit a full planning application for the project to Derry City and Strabane District Council in the coming weeks. 01. Welcome

Welcome to this pre-application community consultation for our Meenakeeran wind farm and battery energy storage system (BESS) proposal.

02. Why Meenakeeran?

When identifying a potential wind farm and battery energy storage site, ABO Energy considers several different factors. These include, but aren’t limited to:

03. Why renewable energy?

The Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 set a target that by 2030, at least 80% of the electricity consumed in Northern Ireland must come from renewable sources generated within the region.

04. What is being proposed?

The proposed Meenakeeran wind farm includes five turbines, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) area and associated ancillary development, as illustrated on the site layout plan above.

05. How will the project look?

A Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) is being prepared by Shanti McAllister Landscape Planning & Design Ltd, an independent consultant and Chartered Landscape Architect with 23 years’ experience preparing LVIAs for wind farms in Northern Ireland.

06. Why Co-location?

The Meenakeeran wind farm and battery energy storage project is using an approach called ‘co-location’ of generation and storage on the same site.

07. Planning Policy

Section 45 (1) of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 requires that all applications must have regard to the local plan, so far as material to the application, and all other material considerations.

08. Project Benefits

ABO Energy NI commissioned Cogent Management Consulting LLP to articulate and quantify the predicted monetary and non-monetary impacts (at a national, regional and local level) that may be attributable to the development of Meenakeeran Wind Farm.

09. Environmental Considerations

ABO Energy NI is currently undertaking an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and an Environmental Statement (ES) will be submitted alongside the planning application for the Meenakeeran wind farm and battery energy storage project.
